Throwback to a Dialogue on Quality Training Outcomes

Reflecting on conversations at the GWO Safety & Training Forum '25 and next steps.

As a community-driven organisation, understanding our impact on stakeholders’ everyday lives is imperative. From Public Hearings and incident reports to workshops at our events and webinars, we rely on the information you share with us to measure our impact and improve outcomes.

A key finding for us was the feedback we received at the 2025 Forum, where participants examined how GWO can support training providers throughout the course participant journey’s five steps by evaluating and discussing the current vs. proposed level of prescriptiveness.

Assessments: An Opportunity for Standardisation and Digitalisation

While the findings showed alignment across most steps, with a desire for clearer, more consistent rules where safety and assessment outcomes are at stake, and flexibility where instructors need to adapt to learner abilities, local conditions, and innovation opportunities, a larger discrepancy was identified at the final destination, the assessment.

When examining this discrepancy further, the Forum participants agreed on a number of points, including:

  • Instructor competence is a foundational requirement for achieving consistent outcomes,
  • There is a need for increased prescriptiveness in learning and assessment outcomes, and
  • GWO should look into offering a digital assessment platform that standardises outcome capturing and evaluation.

Increasing Assessment Quality, Reducing Administration

Diving deeper into how course participant assessments can be refined further, enhancing quality and fairness while potentially reducing the administrative burden for training providers, the participants suggested a broad range of solutions, including clearer pass/fail criteria, question banks and localisation.

In the three months that have passed since the Forum ’25, our team has analysed your feedback carefully, held it up against existing data and identified opportunities for making the proposed improvements.

As we enter 2026, we are excited to continue our joint effort to improve outcomes while allowing our large community of instructors to focus on delivering high quality training. And as we refine your feedback into actionable processes, you can expect updates about where we're at and what the solutions might look like.
