Basic Technical Training Standard

Version 7
April 1, 2022

The Global Wind Organisation Basic Technical Training Standard consists of three modules and an additional installation module which can be taken after certification in the mechanical module. The GWO Basic Technical Training is divided into the following four modules:

Mechanical

The aim of this BTT Mechanical Module is to enable the participants to be able to perform basic mechanical tasks under the supervision of an experienced technician.

Overall learning objective of the BTT Mechanical Module:

  • Solve basic mechanical tasks responsibly (supervised by an experienced technician), using safe working procedures and the correct PPE (Ability, basic level)

Electrical

The aim of this BTT Electrical Module is to enable the participants to work safely with electricity under supervision in a wind turbine environment.

After successfully having completed the BTT Electrical Module, the participants can:

  • Take responsibility to solve basic electrical tasks (supervised by an experienced technician) by using safe working procedures and the correct PPE (Ability, basic level)

Hydraulics

The aim of the BTT Hydraulic Module is to enable the participants to carry out basic hydraulic tasks, supervised by an experienced technician.

After successfully having completed the BTT Hydraulic Module, the participants can:

  • Solve basic hydraulic tasks responsibly (supervised by an experienced technician), using safe working procedures and the correct PPE (Ability, basic level)

Installation

The aim of this BTT Installation Module is to enable the participants to work safely with basic installation tasks under supervision in a wind turbine environment.

After having successfully completed the BTT Installation Module, the participants can:

  • Solve basic installation tasks (supervised by an experienced technician) by using safe working procedures and the correct PPE (Ability, basic level)

Upon completion of the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) Basic Technical Training (BTT), participants will possess an awareness of the hazards encountered when working on hydraulic, mechanical, electrical and installation systems, and how to control and mitigate these hazards, preparing candidates for working both on and offshore in the wind power industry.

These training modules can be delivered independently of one another or as stand-alone training. The installation module is not part of the mandatory BTT training, and it is up to the duty holder to decide if this should be mandatory training.

Technicians with existing training from GWO member companies can have their skills merit assessed and where appropriate can be offered gap training to fill in any of the missed learning objectives.
