The first pilot of the GWO High Voltage Training Standard launched at Mærsk Training, Svendborg.
The first-ever pilot of the new Global Wind Organisation (GWO) High Voltage Training Standard has just been completed at Maersk Training, Svendborg. The pilot marks an important step towards a more consistent and safety-focused approach to high voltage work in the wind industry.
Bringing the High Voltage Operations module into a real-world training environment for the first time, certification body DNV was also present as observers ahead of the accreditation process. The course is designed to support technicians working on or around high voltage systems, helping to ensure they have the right knowledge, awareness and confidence to do their jobs safely.
Putting a new standard to the test in a live setting is a vital part of evaluating its effectiveness for learners. The pilot offered the chance to evaluate how the content flows, how it’s received and how it connects with the realities of day-to-day work in the field. Morten Dyhr Arildsen, Instructor at Maersk Training, observed:
There’s a real difference between theory and practice. This pilot gave us the chance to test how the training works with real technicians, in a real setting. That’s where the most valuable feedback comes from.
The High Voltage Operations module focuses on the safe handling, operation and basic understanding of high voltage systems—covering the essential knowledge technicians need to stay safe and perform effectively in HV environments. Morten added:
One of the strong points was how engaged the participants were. They brought their experience into the room and weren’t shy about questioning things—that’s exactly what we need to make this training the best it can be.
Throughout the three days, instructors, participants and observers provided structured feedback on their experience of the HV Operations module. Those insights are now feeding directly into the final adjustments to the standard, helping make sure it’s both technically sound and practically relevant. Thomas Redmond, Training Project Manager at GWO, remarked:
The aim has always been to deliver something practical which supports real work in real-life conditions. With Maersk Training’s input from the pilot, we’re one step closer to delivering just that.
With the pilot completed, the next step is refinement. GWO will now finalise the content and prepare for full accreditation and rollout. The result will be a globally recognised training standard that supports safer high voltage operations across the industry.
