GWO White Paper on Job Roles Paves Way for Careers in Wind

Wind technician Job Roles initiative draws clear pathway for new talent. Employer-validated career map will support educators, guiding students towards industry-standard safety and technical training.

As the workforce scales up to deliver on renewable energy targets, the demand for skilled wind technicians is growing faster than ever. GWO forecasts the wind sector will need a workforce of 532,000 technicians by 2028—40% of whom will be new recruits. To support this workforce transformation, GWO is launching Job Roles: Mapping Career Pathways for Wind Turbine Technicians—an initiative designed to support training providers in their essential role to raise awareness of wind technician job roles and the training pathways that are needed to pursue careers in wind.

Further to serving as a guiding framework for training providers, Job Roles is a practical solution to one of the industry’s most urgent challenges: how to develop a skilled workforce at scale and across borders.Standardising roles and training and aligning them with real-world job requirements helps to close the skills gap and accelerate entry into the industry.

Jakob Lau Holst, CEO of GWO, comments:

With standardisation and workforce development at the core of what we do, I am proud to publish this white paper, which complements other key efforts, including Jobs4RE and partnerships with national associations such as the Japanese Wind Power Association (JWPA) and the Brazilian Association for Wind Energy and New Technologies (ABEEólica), to answer one vital question: how can we train enough people, fast enough, to meet global renewable targets?

Engage to drive change in the workforce

Training providers, GWO members and national authorities, alongside regulators and international development organisations, all play a role in scaling the impact of Job Roles. Together, they can ensure incoming cohorts of trainee wind technicians are equipped with the skills they need to succeed- anywhere in the world. GWO invites you to explore Job Roles via the GWO website, follow the campaign on LinkedIn and engage with the training community at upcoming events and webinars.
