This year’s Solar Energy Bucharest Summit (SEBS) in Romania saw participation from GWO for the first time, with the emphasis on ensuring industry-recognised skills for the solar workforce.

On 22 April, GWO Project Manager, Peter Wiingaard, attended the Solar Energy Bucharest Summit (SEBS) 2026 in Romania. Here, key industry players from the solar industry, with a range of expertise, from Technician Education to Technology Innovation, gathered to discuss the latest developments in the solar energy community.
Covering a broad range of topics, from investor perspectives on how to accelerate solar projects and stimulate energy demand, to exploring the role of EPC contractors in the energy transition, the programme provided a 360-degree view of the many moving parts involved in getting solar projects off the ground.
At the heart of solar projects is the need for the workforce qualified to deploy them. The event’s third panel session “The Need for a Unified Solar Workforce Training Standard for Safety and Quality Work”, focused precisely on the question of how to bring specialised solar skills into alignment with industry-endorsed safety regulations.
During the panel, Peter introduced the audience to the Global Solar Training Standards, co-developed with the Global Solar Council, and showcased how they ensure an industry standard for enabling the solar workforce to operate safely in a utility-scale Solar PV environment.
With global solar generation now equivalent to the total electricity demand of the EU, according to the energy think tank Ember, solar’s record-breaking growth will continue to impact the demand for specialised solar technician skills, in order for employers to keep pace.
GWO would like to thank all of the organisers and contributors at the SEBS 2026 for igniting these inspiring discussions on standardising solar training for workforce skills and industry safety. In the solar industry, cross-functional collaboration remains vital.
