About GWO

Global Wind Organisation is a non-profit body founded by leading wind turbine manufacturers and operators, to create a safer and more productive workforce.

GWO members strive for an injury free work environment in the wind turbine industry, setting common international standards for safety training and emergency procedures.

In response to the demand for a recognisable Basic Safety Training (BST) standard in the wind turbine industry, GWO published the first version of the BST in 2012. This was followed by the Basic Technical Training (BTT) Standard in 2017.

By the end of 2017, more than 44,000 individual technicians from 135 countries had been certified according to the BST standard. By June 2018, more than 250 training sites had been opened by GWO Certified Training Providers around the world.

What are GWO Training Standards?

GWO training standards describe the requirements for training courses that are recommended by members of GWO. By complying with GWO standards and criteria, certified Training Providers (TP) are considered by GWO members as competent and proficient.

Any individual with a GWO certificate is considered competent and knowledgeable within the field of Basic Safety in the wind industry. GWO members accept a BST certificate as confirmation a technician or other wind turbine professional possesses the required knowledge to stop an unsafe work situation.

GWO works with its membership and the industry supply chain, sharing industry statistics and risk evaluations to identify training objectives. In some cases these are subsequently developed into new industry standards. The GWO Basic Technical Training Standard and GWO Basic Safety Training (refresher) Standard are two examples of this.
